frequently asked questions

1

What are the basic requirements to renew my PR card?

You must still be a Permanent Resident of Canada and have met the residency requirement of at least 730 days of physical presence within the last 5 years. You should not have any removal orders, unresolved legal issues affecting your status, or an ongoing Canadian citizenship application.

2

Will I need to attend an interview?

In some cases, you may be asked to attend an interview at an IRCC office to verify your identity and residency details.

3

What if I need my PR card urgently?

If you need urgent processing for reasons like work, travel, or an emergency, you may request expedited processing. You’ll need to provide proof of urgency, such as travel bookings or a job offer.

4

What if I don’t meet the 730-day residency requirement for PR card renewal?

If you don’t meet the 730-day residency requirement, your renewal application may be refused. However, you may be able to apply on humanitarian and compassionate grounds if you have valid reasons for not meeting the requirement.

5

What happens if my PR card expires while I’m outside Canada?

If your PR card expires while you’re abroad, you’ll need to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return to Canada.

6

Can I renew my PR card if it has already expired?

Yes, you can renew an expired PR card as long as you still meet the residency obligation. However, an expired card may cause difficulties if you need to travel or prove your status within Canada.
